RGPBALLS Metallographic Laboratory tests: reliability and control

The Metallographic Laboratory doesn’t only check materials, but investigates every aspect of them to certify their mechanical and chemical characteristics.

Through a comprehensive range of advanced tests, we ensure that each component meets stringent strength and reliability requirements.

Specimen production, analysis and test report issuing

The first step in any analysis is specimen preparation, a crucial step in obtaining accurate results. At RGPBALLS, we perform this with state-of-the-art equipment and using electrolytic etching, when necessary, to highlight the microstructure of the material, which is then analysed with a microscope and dedicated software. The results are stored in a computerised database and are supplemented by images and technical reports to ensure traceability and transparency.

Checking for inclusions in the material

The presence of non-metallic inclusions can compromise the mechanical strength of a component. Using advanced microscopy techniques, the laboratory identifies and classifies impurities in the material, ultimately ensuring that its purity meets the required standards.

Microstructural material analysis

Microstructural analysis is a crucial factor in determining the quality of the material and its mechanical properties: using optical and electron microscopy, the laboratory assesses grain size, phase distribution and the presence of any defects, providing key data for improving production processes.

Checking the decarbonisation layer and microcracks

Decarbonisation can negatively affect the strength and durability of a material. With targeted tests, the metallography laboratory therefore assesses the depth of the decarburised layer and detects any cracks, preventing the risk of structural failure.

Corrosion resistance test (L’Oréal Test)

Corrosion resistance is crucial for the durability of materials in critical environments. The RGPBALLS Metallographic Laboratory performs specific tests, including the L’Oréal Test, which simulates aggressive environmental conditions to verify the material’s behaviour over time. This is particularly relevant in sectors such as automotive, aerospace and chemicals.

RGPBALLS: innovation and precision for material quality

In an industrial context where every detail counts, the RGPBALLS Metallographic Laboratory represents a benchmark for materials analysis and certification. The use of advanced technologies and the experience of our team guarantee reliable solutions for companies aiming for the highest quality.

Our scientific approach, combined with rigorous methodologies, optimises production processes, reduces waste and improves the safety of finished products. Relying on RGPBALLS means investing in innovation, precision and uncompromising quality.

23/03/2026 Ball bearings for engines and pumps
In industrial rotating systems, such as engines and pumps, bearings are one of the key components for reliability and operational continuity. Within these components, ball bearings for engines and pumps play a decisive role: they reduce friction, ensure smooth movements and contribute to the stability of the system even under severe operational conditions. In areas such as the marine industry, oil & gas, industrial plant engineering or fluid handling, where moisture, high loads and corrosive agents are commonplace, the quality of the balls has a direct impact on energy efficiency, noise, wearing and durability of the system. Therefore, the choice of suitable ball bearings becomes more than just a detail.

17/03/2026 CAD/CAM software and digital simulations in the manufacturing of precision balls
The digitisation of industrial production is already taking shape at an early stage of the process, well before the material enters the line. In the production of precision balls and ball bearings, where reliability and micrometric tolerances are structural requirements, CAD/CAM software and digital simulations are a decisive lever of control and competitiveness. It is in fact possible through digital design to define and validate every critical parameter before physical machining, creating a direct continuity between design, process and final result.

16/01/2026 Recycling and reuse of precision balls: sustainable practices for industrial products
The recycling of industrial products is a crucial issue today: every year, billions of industrial balls reach the end of their useful life in bearings, valves and precision mechanisms. In the past, these components were disposed of, with two consequences: the production of enormous quantities of metal waste and the loss of value of both the raw materials and the energy invested in producing them. The recovery and remelting of precision balls is now a concrete lever for reducing environmental impact and increasing production efficiency. Steel and metal alloys can be remelted and reused without losing their original properties, closing the production cycle with structured collection, selection and remelting processes.

13/01/2026 The importance of suitable materials for food contact in precision balls
When it comes to food safety, attention often focuses on ingredients and production processes. However, there is a less visible but equally crucial aspect: the materials used for food contact in the mechanical components of pumps, valves, dosing and packaging systems. Even a component measuring just a few millimetres can compromise the quality of an entire production line if it does not comply with standards. The choice of certified food-grade materials therefore becomes strategic in protecting consumers and safeguarding the brand's reputation.

08/01/2026 Automation and robotics in precision ball production lines
The evolution towards Industry 4.0 has made the automation of ball production a key factor in competitiveness. This sector requires extremely high levels of accuracy, which are difficult to achieve with manual intervention alone: process automation, together with robotics and artificial vision, has transformed what was once a craft sector into an efficient digital industrial ecosystem. Where previously skilled operators manually lapped each ball, nowadays automated and interconnected lines produce millions of pieces with consistent quality and tolerances in the region of microns.

17/12/2025 Industrial product certifications for precision balls: quality assurance and conformity
Compliance is the zero point of advanced manufacturing, especially for those operating in highly regulated sectors, and turns industrial product certifications into strategic tools that ensure quality and competitiveness of individual components. In fact, an accuracy of just a few millimetres in a precision ball can determine the difference between a compliant machine and an entire blocked production line. The regulatory framework governing industrial products is increasingly complex. Regulations and directives are no longer just about mechanical performance, but encompass chemical safety, environmental impact and responsibility along the entire supply chain.

15/12/2025 Reducing the carbon footprint in precision ball production
Measuring and reducing the carbon footprint now guides the most advanced industrial development strategies. In the case of precision balls, this approach translates into the rigorous analysis of every step: from the origin of the materials to energy management, all the way to transport and the end of the product's life. Nowadays, companies are driven by two converging forces: on one hand, increasingly stringent regulations and, on the other hand, market demand for high-performance components but manufactured with environmental responsibility. In this scenario, sustainability becomes a driver for innovation that brings with it more efficient processes, greener technologies and new opportunities.
